Attention New Calf Owners

Posted by ElmoreCattle on April 20, 2010 at 7:16 PM

Life is good on the farm in Cross Anchor. Spring calves are about thirty to sixty days old, running around, and looking good. We are getting ready to load up the trailer again and head to a show in North Carolina.

We hope that everyone who purchased a calf in March is enjoying their investment. For those of you who received your calf a few weeks ago, we hope that you are well on your way to having a perfectly trained show animal. We hope that you have halter broke your calf so that he or she will walk outside of a stall. Rinsing, combing, and blow drying should be in your daily routine, especially if you have a show coming up. Remember to be careful when using soap. If it is used to often, the skin and hair may become dried out and create dandruff. Water and "elbow grease" will be sufficient.

If your calf was just delivered to you a few days ago, we hope that your calf has adjusted to his or her new home. We hope that you are working hard to get your calf halter broke. You should be tying your calf up daily, but don't tie too high! (A good rule of thumb is to tie with the chin parallel to the ground.) The height that you tie your calf's head will be the height he or she will hold it in the show ring. Introduce the show stick to your calf as you are working to move your calf around the stall.

We would love to see pictures as your animal is progressing. Feel free to call or email with any questions!

PS. If you don't have any shows within the next few months, now is a good time to body clip your calf. Keep it cool with plenty of clean water and shade.
