HOT HOT HOT

Posted by ElmoreCattle on August 7, 2010 at 2:15 PM

Summer is in full swing. Temperatures are up in SC, and probably in FL too. We hope that you are doing everything possible to keep those cattle cool. “When humans are uncomfortable at 80° F. and feel hot at 90° F., cattle may well be in the danger zone for extreme heat stress,” says Glenn Selk, Oklahoma State University Extension cattle reproduction specialist, in his weekly Cow-calf Corner newsletter. “Humidity is an additional stressor that intensifies the heat by making body heat dissipation more difficult.” When it comes to heat, cattle need water and air flow. However, dirty water doesn't do much good. Dumping and scrubbing water buckets should be done multiple times a week. Shade and air curculation is a necessity. You may be interested in Sullivan Supply's TURBO Fan. Also, Sullivan's Cool Collars are a great way to cool down cattle in the heat of the day. Clipping your calf's head and neck will also keep them cool. We hope you keep working your cattle on the halter and with the show stick so they will be ready for any upcoming shows before the county fair. Working cattle early in the morning, or in the evening is a smart way to beat the heat. Your cattle will most likely not cooperate with you in the middle of the day. Let us know if you have any questions or problems! Feel free to call at anytime or email. Also, we would love to stay updated with each of you and your projects...we love pictures! Have a fun summer, stay cool, and keep those cattle cool too!
